Now that seven years have passed what has changed?

DASH CAM VIEW

Watch the dashcam

Absolutely very little.

Changes to road marking have occurred making two previous turns illegal.

An investigation has been undertaken and we wish to advise that vehicles may lawfully turn over a single solid centre line, as long as the vehicle is entering or leaving a side street or property. This means that at this intersection;

- Vehicles travelling north on Bennetts Road, after turning left from Old Cleveland Road;

• Can lawfully turn right into the service station, over the single solid line.

• Can lawfully turn left into the corner shops.

- Vehicles travelling north on Bennetts Road, after turning right from Old Cleveland Road;

• Can lawfully turn right into the service station, over the single solid line.

Are prohibited from turning left into the corner shops, due to the straight arrow markings.

- Vehicles travelling south on Bennetts Road;

Are prohibited from turning right into the corner shops due to the double solid lines at the tail of the traffic island.

- Vehicles exiting the corner shops on Bennetts Road;

Must turn left from the driveway onto Bennetts Road, as it is unlawful to cross double solid lines.

- Vehicles exiting the service station on Bennetts Road;

• Can lawfully turn left or right onto Bennetts Road.

Dear Councillor Helen Abrahams

I wish to bring to your immediate attention the continuing dangerous situation of motor vehicles crossing sets of double lines to enter a corner shopping complex at the intersection of Bennetts Roads and Old Cleveland Road Coorparoo.

On my return journey from the PA Hospital last Tuesday 14 April 2015 about 2.35 pm a delivery van turned right from Bennetts Road into the shopping complex (which is in the South East corner of your ward) and in doing so crossed TWO sets of double white lines.

I have contacted the company involved for their internal actions.

This has been a long standing issue and the site of many minor accidents over the years. I would suggest that the majority of these incidents did not require the police to attend.

I would however suggest that you take the time to visit this shopping complex and talk to the shop owners and their staff to ascertain first hand their observations on the regular occurrence of near misses and actual traffic incidents.

You will most probably see for yourself a number of vehicles that either turn right into the site from Bennetts Road and the ones which turn right out of the site onto Bennetts Road crossing TWO sets of double white lines in doing so.

I would appreciate your feed back on this issue.

RESPONSE

16 April 2015

Good afternoon Barry,

Further to your correspondence received and on behalf of Cr Helen Abrahams, I forwarded your concerns to Council’s Senior Transport Network Engineer, Mr Taelor Jorgensen, for his investigation and response. He has provided feedback as follows:

“This was investigated on behalf of Councillor Shayne Sutton not long ago regarding crossing a single solid line. Here is the response provided which should help clarify the situation at this intersection. The bold sections relate to Mr Wilson’s enquiry regarding the double white lines.

An investigation has been undertaken and we wish to advise that vehicles may lawfully turn over a single solid centre line, as long as the vehicle is entering or leaving a side street or property. This means that at this intersection;

- Vehicles travelling north on Bennetts Road, after turning left from Old Cleveland Road;

• Can lawfully turn right into the service station, over the single solid line.

• Can lawfully turn left into the corner shops.

- Vehicles travelling north on Bennetts Road, after turning right from Old Cleveland Road;

• Can lawfully turn right into the service station, over the single solid line.

• Are prohibited from turning left into the corner shops, due to the straight arrow markings.

- Vehicles travelling south on Bennetts Road;

• Are prohibited from turning right into the corner shops due to the double solid lines at the tail of the traffic island.

- Vehicles exiting the corner shops on Bennetts Road;

• Must turn left from the driveway onto Bennetts Road, as it is unlawful to cross double solid lines.

- Vehicles exiting the service station on Bennetts Road;

• Can lawfully turn left or right onto Bennetts Road.

In light of the above, this intersection has been identified for upgrades in the near future with design work currently being undertaken. These works will improve safety at this location by modifying the left slip lane into Bennetts Road.

Poor driver behaviour, including unlawful turns at this intersection, is best addressed through the enforcement of the Road Rules.

Should you observe drivers performing unlawful turns on Bennetts Road to access the corner shop, it is recommended that you contact the Police directly on 134 666, with the times and days this is more likely to occur, which would assist them to coordinate enforcement activities.”

I trust that this information is of assistance at this time.

Good afternoon Taelor,

On behalf of Cr Helen Abrahams, please find below a request for investigation into vehicles breaching painted road markings by crossing over two sets of double white lines in the vicinity of a shopping centre located at the intersection of Bennetts Road and Old Cleveland Road, Coorparoo.

Mr Barry Wilson has spent some time observing this behaviour and states:

“I wish to bring to your immediate attention the continuing dangerous situation of motor vehicles crossing sets of double lines to enter a corner shopping complex at the intersection of Bennetts Roads and Old Cleveland Road Coorparoo.

Could you please investigate this concern and provide your response in due course?

Many thanks,

Good afternoon Barry,

Thank you for the email with the video image which has been passed on to both Cr Helen Abrahams and Council’s Senior Transport Engineer, Mr Taelor Jorgensen. He responded saying:

“Thanks for the video. We receive requests regarding this intersection a couple times a year. CRU are currently working on a design for this intersection and Mr Wilson’s concerns should be sent to them for consideration during the design process.”

CRU is Council’s Congestion Reduction Unit and I shall arrange to forward this video and your concerns raised to their area also.

Dear Councillor Abrahams

This is my second email on the same issue.

Your receptionist suggested that I keep the first one short.

I have attached a 5+ seconds video from my dash cam to show the truck mention in my previous email crossing two sets of double white lines on Bennetts Road to enter the shopping centre on the corner of Bennetts Road and Old Cleveland Road. The south east corner of your ward boundary.

I have raised this issue many times in the past and again in 2007 when I was involved in an accident when a driver exited this set of shops and then proceeded to do a U turn in front of me at the end of the double lines.

I web sited this issue in 2007 and the link is below. This issue includes photos, video and correspondence.

http://www.members.optusnet.com.au/rivermouth/bcc-shame-files/index.html (NOW MOVED) http://www.rag.org.au/bennetts/index.html

I believe that it is about time some action is taken on this outstanding issue.
